UK Car Registrations Grow by 26.2 percent in February, Led by Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.

Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric car in the UK in February 2023, with 1,482 registrations.

New car registrations in the UK saw impressive growth in February 2023, with 74,441 new cars joining Britain’s roads, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The data shows that the UK’s new car market grew by 26.2% in February 2023 compared to the same month in 2022.

While February is typically a low-volume month ahead of the March plate change, this year marked the seventh consecutive month of growth, as supply chain shortages eased, bringing the market closer to pre-pandemic levels. Compared to the same month in 2020, the market is down just -6.5%, indicating a strong recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) recorded the most significant growth of all fuel types, up 40.0%, showing a strong appetite for environmentally friendly cars. Meanwhile, zero-emission capable vehicles, including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), continued their upward trend. While new registrations of plug-in electric cars also increased, the overall market grew more quickly, leading to a slight reduction in market share compared to February 2022.

In terms of plug-in electric cars, 17,033 new cars were registered last month, up 13% compared to the same month in 2022. Of these, 12,310 were BEVs, while 4,723 were PHEVs, showing the growing popularity of pure electric cars. HEVs and Mild HEVs also saw increased registrations in February 2023, with 9,633 and 12,116 new cars registered, respectively.
