Record-breaking electric two wheeler sales in 2022.

The EV industry registered huge growth in India in 2022. One million EVs were sold in India in 2022, and about a third of them were electric two-wheelers. Electric two wheeler sales reached 6,24,192 in 2022, a 305% YoY growth. In 2021 the number was 1,53,523(more than 4x growth).

EVs accounted for around 4 percent of total two-wheeler sales in 2022. A total of 1,54,01,578 two-wheelers were sold in 2022. Out of which 1,47,77,200 were petrol vehicles.

Ola Electric, which entered the market in 2021, sold the highest number of electric two-wheelers in 2022. The company sold 1,09,252 units of S1 and S1 Pro electric scooters. In January 2022, Ola Electric sold 1,106 e-scooters, and in December 2022, the company sold 17,280 units (its highest-ever monthly sales). Within just one year of its launch, Ola Electric has captured half of the premium scooter market in India and accounts for 17.5% of the electric two-wheeler market share. The company is rapidly expanding its network in India. In 2023 Ola Electric will start deliveries of its cheapest scooter S1 Air and start the production of Li-ion cells.

Okinawa is in second place with 1,01,682 deliveries in 2022. In October, Okinawa reached its highest monthly sales of 14,941. Okinawa’s iPraise+ is among the top highest-selling two-wheelers in the country.

Hero Electric sold 97,815 electric scooters in 2022 and is in the third position on the sales list. In March, Hero Electric reached its highest monthly sales of 13,027. In 2022, Hero Electric focused on expanding its retail network across India. The company also started production at Mahindra Group’s Pithampur manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. To meet the increasing demand, Hero Electric is setting up a new manufacturing plant in Ludhiana, Punjab. The new plant is expected to be functional by February 2023.

Ampere EV is in fourth place with 79,855 sales. The company reached its highest sales figure of 12,258 in November. In 2022, Ampere increased its retail network in India. The company also rolled out its 50,000th electric scooter from the company’s EV mega-site in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu.

Ather also crossed the 50,000 mark and is in the fifth position on the sales list, with 51,750 deliveries. Ather launched Gen 3 450X in July 2022, with a higher range and better performance. Ather registered an increase in its sales after the launch of Gen 3 450X. The company reached its best monthly figures of 7,834 in November. Ather also inaugurated its second manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, which increased its annual production capacity to 4,20,000.
