FirstElement Fuel partners with Hyundai to fuel and test XCIENT Fuel Cell Heavy Duty trucks in California.

FirstElement Fuel's network of 43 retail hydrogen stations will provide fuel at full 700 bar pressure to three XCIENT Fuel Cell prototypes.

FirstElement Fuel, the world’s leading provider of hydrogen fueling solutions, and Hyundai Motor Company, a leader in Class 8 Fuel Cell Electric Truck development, have joined forces to fuel and test Hyundai’s XCIENT Fuel Cell Heavy Duty trucks in California.

The partnership involves FirstElement Fuel leveraging its True Zero network of hydrogen refueling stations to provide fuel at full 700 bar pressure to three XCIENT Fuel Cell prototypes. The network is comprised of 43 retail hydrogen stations located throughout California, including stations in the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego.

To support pilot programs for other Heavy Duty FCEV OEMs, FirstElement Fuel is deploying its first-of-its-kind high-capacity mobile refueler, which has been developed in collaboration with Taylor-Wharton and Nikkiso. The mobile refueler is capable of high-capacity fueling at 125 kilograms per hour.

FirstElement Fuel is making significant strides in green transportation by piloting three Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks on routes throughout California with their Class A licensed drivers. These drivers have covered over 25,000 miles while emitting zero pollutants, showcasing the potential of hydrogen fuel technology.

As part of this program, FirstElement has completed over 120 hydrogen fills for the XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks. This accomplishment is a testament to the company’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.

What sets FirstElement apart is its unique approach to hydrogen fueling. Unlike other hydrogen networks that rely on gaseous hydrogen, FirstElement’s stations are supplied with liquid hydrogen. This method of distribution and storage is far more efficient, allowing for the large quantities of hydrogen required to efficiently fuel Class 8 Fuel Cell Electric trucks.

Oakland, California is set to become the site of the world’s largest commercial deployment of Class 8 hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks later this year, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor. The project, dubbed NorCAL ZERO, has been jointly funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and is being managed by the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE).

As part of this ambitious initiative, FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor have teamed up to provide valuable data and learnings that will help inform the design considerations for the NorCal ZERO project. The hydrogen refueling partnership between these two leading organizations marks a significant step forward in the development of sustainable transportation solutions that aim to replace fossil fuels.
