Toyota launches Urban Cruiser Hyryder, a self-charging hybrid electric SUV.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is available in two powertrains. One with strong hybrid tech and the other with mild-hybrid technology.

Toyota launched its first hybrid SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Toyota has built this self-charging hybrid electric SUV jointly with Maruti Suzuki.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is available in two petrol drivetrains. One with mild-hybrid tech and the other with strong hybrid technology. The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, strong-hybrid petrol engine paired with an e-drive transmission is made by Toyota, while Maruti Suzuki makes the 1.5-litre engine of the mild-hybrid variant.

The engine in the strong hybrid variant has a standalone output of 91 bhp and 122 Nm of torque and is assisted by an electric motor with an output of 79 bhp and 141 Nm of instant torque. The combined output is 113 bhp. It also has an EV-only mode. The Neo Drive engine (the mild-hybrid variant) produces 103hp output and 137Nm of torque.

Toyota will manufacture this SUV at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka. Pre-bookings for the compact SUV are now open at ₹ 25,000.

Safety features of this hybrid SUV include six airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, ESP, hill-hold assist, 3-point seatbelts for all rear passengers, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, a 360-degree camera setup, all-wheel disc brakes, and hill descent control. It has more than 55 connected features.

The price of this hybrid SUV will be announced next month when it goes on sale.
