BPCL launches 19 EV fast-charging stations across 15 South Indian highways.

These fast EV charging corridors in southern India installed by BPCL will connect important religious and tourist destinations with major South Indian cities.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), one of India’s largest oil and gas companies, has announced the launch of 19 EV fast-charging stations across 15 highways in the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. These stations will be located at 110 fuel stations and will offer a charging capacity of 30 kW.

According to BPCL, the launch of these fast-charging stations is aimed at creating corridors that will connect important religious and tourist destinations with cities in the region. The company has already launched three corridors with 19 fuel stations in Kerala, six corridors with 33 fuel stations in Karnataka, and 10 corridors with 58 fuel stations in Tamil Nadu.

The main objective of these corridors is to remove range anxiety among electric vehicle owners, making it easier for them to drive long distances without worrying about running out of charge. The fuel stations where these charging stations are located will offer safe and secure stoppage points for EV charging, along with clean toilets and restaurants, which are ideal for a break while driving.

These corridors will cover famous religious sites such as Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh, Ranganathaswamy Temple and Jambukeswar Temple in Tamil Nadu, and Guruvayoor Temple and Kadampuzha Temple in Kerala, among others.

BPCL has already converted 21 highways into electric corridors and plans to cover 200 highways with EV fast chargers by March 2023. The company aims to support and accelerate the growth of EVs in the country.

The fast EV charging corridors were inaugurated by P.S. Ravi, Executive Director Incharge (Retail) in the presence of Pushp Kumar Nayar, Head Retail South, Kannabiran D., State Head (Retail) Kerala, and Subhankar Sen, Chief General Manager (Retail Initiative & Brand) at the launch event in Ernakulam, Kerala.

BPCL’s highway fuel stations offer hygienic food options through strategic alliances with leading brands such as McDonald’s, A2B, Cube Stop, Café Coffee Day, and local outlets. Additionally, the company has introduced its chain of In & Out convenience stores at key fuel stations on highways to enhance customer convenience.

These initiatives aim to provide a comfortable and safe experience for travelers, who often face challenges in finding hygienic food options and convenient stores while on long-distance journeys. With these offerings, BPCL hopes to meet the evolving needs of its customers and enhance their overall travel experience.

While the move towards electric vehicles has been gaining momentum in India, the lack of charging infrastructure has been a major hurdle in the widespread adoption of EVs. The launch of these fast-charging stations by BPCL is a step in the right direction towards addressing this issue and promoting sustainable mobility in the country.
