Waymo and Uber forge groundbreaking partnership to expand Autonomous Driving services.

The partnership aims to bring the cutting-edge autonomous driving technology of Waymo to the massive ridesharing platform of Uber, Starting in Phoenix.

Waymo and Uber Technologies Inc. have announced a transformative partnership aimed at broadening the availability of autonomous driving technology. This multi-year strategic alliance seeks to combine Waymo’s cutting-edge autonomous driving technology with the extensive reach of Uber’s renowned ridesharing and delivery networks.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. and a pioneer in the field of autonomous vehicles, and Uber, the global ride-hailing giant, are set to revolutionize the way people access mobility. Since their respective founding in 2009, both companies have made significant strides in transforming the transportation landscape. Now, they have come together to unleash the potential of their complementary strengths.

The primary objective of this groundbreaking partnership is to make the Waymo Driver, Waymo’s autonomous driving system, widely available to the public through the Uber platform. Starting in Phoenix, Arizona, the integration will commence later this year, initially deploying a select number of Waymo vehicles within Waymo’s expanded operating territory in the city. This coverage will encompass a staggering area of over 180 square miles, solidifying Phoenix’s status as the world’s largest fully autonomous service area.

By joining forces, Waymo and Uber aim to unlock the immense possibilities that arise from marrying advanced autonomous driving technology with Uber’s vast network of riders and delivery services. Users of the Uber and Uber Eats applications will be able to experience the safety and convenience of riding in a Waymo vehicle. Moreover, Uber customers will have the opportunity to access Waymo’s autonomous driving capabilities seamlessly and enjoy the novel experience of being transported by cutting-edge technology.

While Uber users will be able to summon a Waymo vehicle through the Uber app, the collaboration ensures that Waymo One app users can continue to directly hail a Waymo vehicle as before, preserving the autonomy and flexibility that Waymo’s existing customer base has grown accustomed to.

We’re excited to offer another way for people to experience the enjoyable and life-saving benefits of full autonomy,” said Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo. “Uber has long been a leader in human-operated ridesharing, and the pairing of our pioneering technology and all-electric fleet with their customer network provides Waymo with an opportunity to reach even more people.”

“Uber provides access to a global and reliable marketplace across mobility, delivery, and freight,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. “Fully autonomous driving is quickly becoming part of everyday life, and we’re excited to bring Waymo’s incredible technology to the Uber platform.”
