Volvo delivers electric truck that can handle a total weight of 74 tonnes.

Volvo Trucks has taken a significant step in the electrification of heavy transport by delivering an electric truck capable of handling a total weight of 74 tonnes to a haulier in Gothenburg, Sweden. This milestone marks the growing trend of hauliers investing in electric trucks, even for heavy-duty transportation.

Mattson Åkeri, a well-established haulage company based in Gothenburg, has recently acquired three heavy electric Volvo FH trucks from Volvo Trucks. Over the past few weeks, one of the trucks has been undergoing rigorous testing in container traffic within the port area of Arendal, Gothenburg. This test forms part of a High-Capacity Transport (HCT) project, where the truck, equipped with two trailers, spans an impressive length of 32 meters while still maintaining the ability to handle a gross combination weight of 74 tonnes.

The electric truck being trialed is the Volvo FH Electric 6X4, which relies on green electricity for its operations. Mattson Åkeri has installed two fast 180 kW chargers in their depot in Arendal to facilitate the charging process. This strategic move ensures the truck remains powered by environmentally friendly sources throughout its operations.

Looking ahead, the tested truck is expected to operate between Gothenburg and the city of Borås, which is located approximately 70 kilometers away from Gothenburg. This demonstrates the truck’s potential for long-distance journeys while maintaining its eco-friendly and sustainable performance.

Since Volvo Trucks commenced production of all-electric trucks in 2019, the company has impressively sold nearly 5,000 electric trucks across 40 countries worldwide. This success can be attributed to Volvo Trucks’ commitment to offering the industry’s most comprehensive product range, encompassing six electric models currently in series production. These models cater to a diverse range of transport needs within and between cities.

In line with their dedication to sustainable transportation, Volvo Trucks has set an ambitious goal for the future. The company aims to ensure that electric trucks make up half of all trucks sold globally by 2030. This commitment exemplifies Volvo Trucks’ determination to drive the transition towards sustainable and eco-friendly transport solutions on a global scale.

High-Capacity Transport (HCT) initiatives play a crucial role in achieving this vision. By allowing vehicles to increase their length and/or gross weight, HCT projects facilitate the transportation of larger loads per vehicle. Importantly, HCT concepts can be implemented across various drivelines, ensuring flexibility and adaptability within the industry.

Notably, several HCT projects are already underway or planned across Europe. One such example is Finland, where regulations permit the transportation of up to 76 tonnes of total weight and 34.5-meter truck combinations on most roads. Sweden also permits driving with a maximum weight of 74 tonnes (on the BK4 road network) and has authorized trials of truck combinations up to 34.5 meters and 100 tonnes on specific road networks, subject to appropriate permissions from authorities.

“We want to show that all-electric solutions also work in applications with high total weights and a high utilization rate. Together with Mattson Åkeri, the Swedish Transport Administration, and several other partners, we are now looking at how we can optimize the operation of the electric truck, including how charging should take place in the most efficient way,” explains Lena Larsson, project manager of the HCT project within Volvo’s technology organization.
