Volkswagen unveils new ID.7, with a range of up to 700 km.

The launch of the Volkswagen ID.7 is scheduled for autumn 2023 in Europe and China; North America will follow in 2024.

Volkswagen has unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV), the ID.7, which is set to revolutionize long-distance travel with its range of up to 700 kilometers on a single charge. The ID.7 is the German carmaker’s first global electric model for the upper mid-size class, with plans to launch in Europe and China later this year and in North America by 2024.

The ID.7 is designed based on aerodynamic principles, with a roof that slopes elegantly to the rear in a coupé style. This feature contributes to achieving an excellent drag coefficient of about 0.23 depending on the vehicle equipment. The long wheelbase and short overhangs create plenty of space in the vehicle interior for all occupants.

With a length of almost five meters, the model also boasts an enhanced customer-focused operating concept and a high-quality appearance. Its spacious interior and premium technologies make the ID.7 a comfortable limousine for long distance travel, opening up a new segment for the ID. family.

The ID.7 is the first MEB model with a completely new, highly efficient drive generation. With 210 kW (286 PS), it is the most powerful and highest-torque electric drive motor in a Volkswagen ID. model so far. This power variant is used in the ID.7 independently of the chosen battery size.

The power unit with the internal designation APP550 was developed together with Volkswagen Group Components in Kassel (Germany) and is also produced there. The new electric drive has been optimized above all in terms of its energy consumption. Depending on the battery sizes, it is predicted that WLTP ranges of up to 700 kilometers and charging capacities of up to about 200 kW will be possible. The ID.7 therefore underlines its long-distance suitability for frequent drivers and fleet customers.

In addition to its impressive range, powertrain, and spacious interior, the Volkswagen ID.7 also boasts a new operating and display concept that enhances the driving experience for customers. Volkswagen has listened to feedback from its customers and has improved the operating experience in relevant areas.

The ID.7 introduces a new 15-inch infotainment system screen, which is complemented by an augmented reality head-up display, a new air conditioning operating concept, and freely assignable favorites buttons. These features are standard in the ID.7, providing a superior user experience.

The backlit touch slider is another new feature in the ID.7, adding a touch of style to the vehicle’s interior. This slider allows for intuitive control of the volume and temperature, adding to the overall comfort and convenience of the ride.

Volkswagen ID.7 offers several equipment options that are usually found only in higher classes of premium competitors. One such option is the massage seats, which have received a seal of approval from the German Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR). The seats offer a massage function that enhances the comfort level of the ride and provides relief to the passengers on long journeys.

Another exclusive feature of the ID.7 is the electronically dimmable panoramic sunroof. The sunroof comes with smart glass, which can be switched between opaque and transparent settings with just a touch control. In addition, the roof can be operated by natural voice commands using the new IDA voice assistant.

The optional front seats are also a new development for Volkswagen, as they offer adaptive seat Climatronic for the first time. The seats have a cooling or heating function as required and a drying function. The adaptive seat Climatronic adds to the overall comfort of the ride, particularly during hot or cold weather conditions.

Furthermore, the ID.7 also comes with a 700-watt sound system from Harman Kardon. The system features 14 high-end loudspeakers, including a centre speaker at the front and a subwoofer in the luggage compartment, providing an impressive sound experience for passengers.

The ID.7 is equipped with Travel Assist, a feature developed in collaboration with CARIAD, the software company of the VW Group. This feature allows the vehicle to take over lateral and longitudinal control as needed, utilizing swarm data to improve accuracy. At speeds above 90 km/h, the ID.7 can also support assisted lane changing on multi-lane motorways, with the driver monitoring the process. This significantly reduces the strain of driving. Additionally, the ID.7 can independently perform assisted parking manoeuvres, including parking with memory function up to a distance of 50 meters. Drivers can either remain in the vehicle or monitor the parking procedure from outside using the smartphone app.

The ID.7 will be produced at the Volkswagen plant in Emden, Germany for the European and North American markets, while in China, the ID.7 models will be manufactured locally.

Volkswagen is ramping up its electric vehicle efforts, with plans to release ten new electric models by 2026, including the recently announced ID.7. This year alone, Volkswagen is launching the ID.3, the long wheelbase ID. Buzz, and the ID.7. In 2026, the car manufacturer plans to release an electric compact SUV and the production version of the ID.2all, both priced under 25,000 euros. Volkswagen aims to have the widest range of electric vehicles compared to its competitors.
