The 4680 cells were unveiled in 2020. It offers six times more power and five times the energy capacity than the 2170 cells.

Currently, Tesla is using the 4680 cells in its new Model Y produced at Giga Texas, and Tesla itself is making it. In the future, Tesla will use the 4680 cells in all its electric vehicles. So to meet the demand, Tesla has partnered with Panasonic for the production of 4680 cells.

In October 2021, Panasonic unveiled its 4680 cells. Panasonic will start the mass production of these cells next year. It will build two production lines at its Wakayama factory in Japan to manufacture these cells. Panasonic is also planning to have a 4680 cells production unit in North America.
