Polestar 4 electric performance SUV coupé unveiled.

Polestar 4 to launch first in China, production to begin in Nov 2023. Full-Scale launch for other countries in early 2024.

Polestar has unveiled its newest electric performance SUV coupé, the Polestar 4 (PS4). This is the second SUV in the brand’s line-up and promises to transform the aerodynamics of a coupé and the space of an SUV into a new breed of SUV coupé.

Polestar has taken design cues from its concept cars and brought them to production in the Polestar 4, making it the fastest Polestar production car to date. The Polestar 4 is positioned between the PS2 and PS3 in terms of size and price, making it an excellent option for those looking for a high-performance electric vehicle.

Polestar 4 Performance

The Polestar 4 boasts impressive speed and power, making it the fastest production car the brand has ever developed. With a maximum power output of 400 kW (544 hp), the Polestar 4 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, delivering an electrifying and nimble driving experience for all occupants.

The PS4 will be available in both dual- and single-motor versions, with single-motor models featuring rear-wheel drive. Despite the high output and performance, control and confidence remain key factors for a responsible and everyday-enjoyable EV experience. The dual-motor version also features semi-active suspension for an additional layer of adjustment between comfort and performance dynamics, with wheels ranging from 20 to 22 inches depending on the version, fitted with tyres from Pirelli and Michelin.

Both long-range versions of the Polestar 4 come equipped with a 102 kWh battery, with the Long Range Dual Motor version featuring a preliminary range target of up to 560 km WLTP, 400 kW (544 hp) and 686 Nm. A disconnect clutch enables the front electric motor to disengage when not required, maximising range and efficiency.

The Polestar 4 also features bi-directional charging, with a 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging capability included for all versions. The charge lid is motorised, while a heat pump is fitted as standard to take advantage of ambient heat when preconditioning the cabin and battery. Moreover, the vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability allows for external devices to draw power from the Polestar 4.

Additionally, the Long Range Dual Motor version comes with a new drive optimisation function that allows the driver to choose between range or performance driving modes. Performance mode provides the maximum power delivery and responsiveness, engaging both motors at all times, while range mode prioritises efficiency and adopts a calmer style, forcing the use of only the rear motor. The Long Range Single Motor version has a preliminary range target of up to 600 km WLTP and features a 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm motor at the rear.

Polestar 4 Technology

Polestar is committed to leading the charge towards an engaging, connected, and self-driving future for all of its vehicles. In the new Polestar 4, the infotainment system is powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and Android Automotive OS, and now features a 15.4-inch landscape-oriented display, bringing the latest technology to the forefront.

Polestar 4 is equipped with Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play, as well as other Google services, providing a seamless and comprehensive connected experience. By collaborating closely with Google, Polestar is able to continuously improve and expand the capabilities of its infotainment system.

For those who demand high-quality audio, the optional Harman Kardon sound system features a 1,400-Watt channel-hybrid amplifier and 12 speakers, with the Nappa Pack adding two headrest speakers to each front seat, bringing the total to an impressive 16. Of course, Apple CarPlay is also included as standard.

Like all other Polestar vehicles, the Polestar 4 benefits from regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, meaning drivers can receive the latest software updates and new features without having to take their car to the workshop. Polestar is committed to providing a seamless, up-to-date driving experience for its customers.

Safety

Polestar 4 inherits Polestar’s commitment to safety, derived from its close association with Volvo Cars, and integrates cutting-edge safety technology inside and outside of the car. The safety features are tested to the same high standards as all other Polestar models, and the vehicle comes equipped with up to nine airbags. In addition, new partnerships bring intelligent safety technology to the forefront, including the SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye.

To provide comprehensive coverage, Polestar 4 features twelve cameras, one radar, and twelve ultrasonic sensors as standard. A driver monitoring camera, which only transmits data and doesn’t record video, tracks the driver’s eyes and head movements to prevent incidents caused by fatigue or incapacitation. The driver monitoring system, in conjunction with hands-on detection in the steering wheel, helps keep the driver actively engaged in driving.

The driver display, located ahead of the steering column, includes speed, battery, and range information. When various assistance systems are activated, a virtual environment displays information about other road users, current driving assistance functions, and navigation information. To minimize distraction, a head-up display (HUD) with a 14.7-inch projection area in front of the driver projects essential vehicle, telephony, and navigation data onto the windshield, further improving driver attentiveness.

The optional Pilot Pack includes enhanced Pilot Assist with lane change assistance, which the driver activates by tapping the indicator stalk in the desired direction. Moreover, the HUD includes a clever “snow mode” function that changes the text color from white to yellow to improve visibility in snowy environments.

Design

Polestar is a brand that values design, and this is evident in the striking appearance of Polestar 4, which draws inspiration from the Polestar Precept concept car. The new model features unique design elements, such as a rear window that has been removed to create an immersive experience for rear occupants, and dual blade front lights with a distinctive Polestar light signature. The Polestar emblem is illuminated from below with millimetre-precision lighting, adding to the car’s sleek aesthetic.

Polestar 4’s aerodynamic efficiency is enhanced by various design features, including a low nose, retractable door handles, flush glazing with frameless windows, rear aero blades, and air flow optimisation around the rear light bar.

The car is built on Geely Holding’s premium Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) and is a D-segment SUV coupé with a spacious body and long 2,999 mm wheelbase. It measures 4,839 mm in length, 2,139 mm in width, and 1,544 mm in height, resulting in a roomy interior, especially in the rear. The rear occupants can enjoy an intimate environment with reclining seats and adjustable ambient lighting inspired by the solar system, allowing the driver to create a personalised driving experience.

Polestar 4 comes standard with a full-length glass roof, which can be fitted with optional electrochromic functionality, enabling the driver to adjust the level of transparency based on their mood. A secondary media and climate control screen is mounted between the front seats, giving rear occupants control over these features.

The car features a high-definition screen in place of the rear-view mirror, which provides a real-time feed from a roof-mounted rear camera, offering a wider field of view than traditional mirrors. Overall, the design of Polestar 4 is a testament to the brand’s commitment to style, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology.
