Polestar 3 electric SUV launched in China.

Polestar 3 is available in China in two versions: the dual-motor long-range version and the dual-motor high-performance version. The long-range version is priced at 698,000 yuan (USD 101k), while the high-performance version is priced at 798,000 yuan (USD 116k).

Polestar, the Swedish electric car brand, has officially launched its first ultra-luxury pure electric SUV, the Polestar 3, in China. The Polestar 3 is a highly anticipated electric SUV that has been in development for several years. It is the brand’s first SUV and the third model in its lineup, following the Polestar 1 and 2.

Polestar 3 is available in China in two versions: the dual-motor long-range version and the dual-motor high-performance version. The long-range version is priced at 698,000 yuan (USD 101k), while the high-performance version is priced at 798,000 yuan (USD 116k). The long-range version has a driving range of up to 670 km (416 mi) and the high-performance version has a range of up to 620 km (385 mi).

The Polestar 3 features a front and rear dual permanent magnet synchronous liquid-cooled motor layout, typically found only in high-performance luxury cars. This design provides a higher power density and lower energy consumption levels, boosting energy conversion efficiency by 10% compared to asynchronous motors. Additionally, lightweight and durable aluminum front and rear axles are utilized to maintain a balanced weight distribution of 50:50.

With this advanced motor configuration, the Polestar 3 dual-motor high-performance version can generate a maximum power of 380 kilowatts and a maximum torque of 910 Newton meters, allowing it to accelerate from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in just 4.7 seconds.

Polestar 3 Exterior Design

The Polestar 3 is the inaugural product in the Polestar Precept concept car’s new design language system. Its bold, wide-body stance creates a futuristic and highly sculptural impression. As a mid-size, ultra-luxury pure electric SUV that seats five, the Polestar 3 measures 4,900 millimeters in length, 1,627 millimeters in height, 2,120 millimeters in width (including side mirrors), and has a wheelbase of 2,985 millimeters.

In line with its high-performance positioning, the Polestar 3 incorporates numerous aerodynamic designs into its style from the onset, achieving a seamless harmony of design and function. The front spoiler expedites the air ahead of the hood, allowing turbulent air to attach to the body earlier and flow more smoothly. Meanwhile, the rear spoiler enhances the vehicle’s downforce and high-speed stability while reducing turbulence at the car’s rear. The rear air diffuser expertly redirects airflow to ensure a smoother flow over the vehicle’s side.

The SmartZone, an intelligent sensing area that replaces the traditional grille design, is another central feature of the Polestar 3 that showcases the Precept concept car’s innovative design. The SmartZone combines cutting-edge driving assistance sensors such as cameras, radar, and sensors in one location, achieving the first-ever perfect integration of perception hardware and body styling design.

The 22-inch multi-spoke black polished forged aluminum alloy wheels, manufactured using exclusive laser etching technology patents, are sturdier, and lighter, and deliver a design that feels like a work of art while enhancing the SUV’s performance.

Interior Design

The Polestar 3’s interior design is a testament to the brand’s commitment to sustainable luxury. The meticulous attention to detail, careful selection of materials, and precise matching of colors in the cabin resulted in a unique and luxurious experience. The vehicle boasts four interior design themes, each with selected primary colors and innovative materials. The seats and interior emit a pure and lavish feel, raising the bar for sustainable electric vehicles.

Seat materials in the Polestar 3 come in three options. Animal Welfare certified Nappa leather seats for the front row feature ventilation and massage functions, made to the highest animal welfare standards by Bridge of Weir, a Scottish company. The MicroTech seats, composed of biodegradable and environmentally friendly materials, provide excellent texture, durability, and breathability. The wool fabric seats, made from certified wool, are skin-friendly, wear-resistant, and wrinkle-resistant, with superior tailoring comparable to luxury bespoke suits.

There are two material options for the interior: the black ash wood interior and the recycled aluminum decoration. The black ash wood interior is shaped through the physical structure of the wood, resulting in a more sustainable material process and reduced waste production. The recycled aluminum decoration, made from high-quality recycled metal, achieves circular use and gives the interior a futuristic feel.

The vehicle’s body structure layout optimization lowers the seating position of the entire car, providing an SUV view range for the driver and a sporty driving feel. The interior also boasts spacious and comfortable seats, with an electric 8-way seat, 4-way lumbar support, and an extended leg support adjustment function available.

In addition, the Polestar 3’s interior ambient lighting adds to the visual space of the cabin. The white LED ambient lighting of the dashboard and door panels, with a color temperature of 5000 Kelvin, highlights the high-end atmosphere of the interior environment. The interior ambient lighting of the high-performance kit is Swedish gold, using laser etching technology to create a 0.4-millimeter-wide light strip that showcases the high precision and quality of Volvo’s manufacturing.

Safety

The Polestar 3 comes equipped with advanced sensor technology to enhance driving assistance and provide reliable road warnings. It features 12 ultrasonic sensors, 5 millimeter-wave radars, and 5 cameras, including a front-facing camera with an 8-megapixel, 120-degree wide-angle view, 4 surround cameras, and 2 driver monitoring sensors inside the vehicle.

The Pilot Assist (PA) function utilizes the front-facing camera to scan lane markings in real-time and provide steering assistance, helping the driver keep the vehicle between the lane markings even through curves at speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. The system also automatically maintains a safe distance when encountering other vehicles.

For even more advanced driving assistance, an optional package is available that includes a Luminar laser radar, NVIDIA Drive Orin chip, and three additional cameras (one at the front windshield and two at the sides), with cleaning functions for the front and side view cameras. This advanced package allows the vehicle to perform comprehensive 3D scans of the surrounding environment, enabling it to provide real-time detection of the vehicle’s surroundings, especially at long distances, and further enhancing its driving assistance capabilities.
