Ola Electric Commences Construction of India's Largest EV Battery Cell Gigafactory.

With a production capacity of 100GWh, the Ola EV cell Gigafctory is set to manufacture four distinct cell variants, including the Li-ion NMC 2170 cell that was unveiled last year.

Ola Electric, the leading Indian electric vehicle manufacturer, has officially announced the commencement of construction for its battery cell Gigafactory, which is poised to become India’s largest EV cell plant. Bhavish Aggarwal, the CEO of Ola Electric, took to Twitter to share the momentous news with the world.

With a production capacity of 100GWh, the Gigafactory will solidify India’s position in the global EV market and help accelerate the country’s transition to sustainable transportation. Sprawling across 100 acres of land, this state-of-the-art facility is set to manufacture four distinct cell variants, including the Li-ion NMC 2170 cell that was unveiled last year.

This latest development follows Ola Electric’s agreement with the Ministry of Heavy Industries under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, signaling the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing of advanced cells within India.

The MoU between Ola Electric and the Government of Tamil Nadu further strengthens this commitment and allows the company to expand its manufacturing capabilities across two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and cells.

Notably, EV manufacturer has already established itself as a pioneer in EV cell research and development with Asia’s largest EV cell R&D center, the Battery Innovation Center, located in Bengaluru. The company has invested a substantial sum of $500 million (approximately ₹4000 crores) in establishing the Battery Innovation Center.

As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, Ola Electric’s ambitious project will undoubtedly play a crucial role in transforming India’s transportation landscape. With its focus on cutting-edge technology, local manufacturing, and research and development, Ola Electric is positioning itself as a key player in the global race towards a sustainable future.
