MG Motor India unveils Comet EV, a 2.9m long electric hatchback.

MG Comet EV is equipped with a 17.3 kWh battery and a motor with a peak power of 41 hp. Production is already underway at MG Halol Plant.

MG Motor India has unveiled its latest offering, the Comet EV, an electric hatchback that is set to officially launch in the coming months. The small and compact EV is essentially a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV, which is currently sold in the Indonesian market.

Built on the GSEV platform, production of the Comet EV has already commenced at the carmaker’s Halol plant in Gujarat. It measures 2974 mm in length, 1505 mm in width, and 1640 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,010 mm, making it one of the smallest cars on Indian roads.

The design of the car is boxy and compact, with a tallboy silhouette, and features a pair of headlamps up front with an LED light bar spanning the width of the car. The profile is upright, and the car comes with 12-inch steel wheels. At the rear, the Comet EV gets square tail lamps with an LED bar.

The car is powered by a rear-axle-mounted electric motor that delivers a peak power of 41 hp and a maximum torque of 110 Nm. The Comet EV is equipped with an IP67-rated 17.3kWh battery pack, which is paired with a 42PS e-motor, providing a claimed range of 230 km. The battery can be fully charged using a 3.3 kW AC charger in around seven hours, or using a 16 AMP socket at home.

Inside, the Comet EV features twin 10.25-inch screens for the digital driver’s display and touchscreen infotainment system. The dashboard also includes physical rotary controls for the air conditioning system. The EV comes with MG’s connected car technology, which provides connectivity via Android Auto and Apple Carplay, as well as two speakers, Bluetooth, a 12V power outlet, and three USB ports.

The safety features of the Comet EV include Dual Front Airbags, ABS + EBD, Rear Parking Sensors, TPMS, Speed sensing auto door lock, Impact sensing door unlock, and more.

The price of the MG Comet EV is yet to be announced, but it is expected to start from Rs 10 lakh and go up to Rs 15 lakh. The car will face competition from the likes of Tata Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and the Citroen eC3 at this price point.
