BYD is the best-selling EV brand in China in Q1 2023, followed by Tesla.

BYD sold 224,729 pure EVs and Tesla sold 137,429 EVs in China in Q1 2023.

The Chinese market saw 4.269 million new cars sold in Q1 2023, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). However, the figure also represents a 13% drop compared to the same period in 2022.

The data also shows that the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) continues to hold steady, representing approximately 31% of total new car sales. This is in line with China’s efforts to encourage the adoption of clean energy vehicles and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

Among the top-selling pure EV brands, BYD takes the lead with 224,729 pure electric vehicles sold in Q1 2023. The company also sold 259,816 PHEVs in the same period, making it the leading PHEV seller.

Tesla follows BYD in the pure EV market, with 137,429 all-electric deliveries in Q1 2023, a 26% increase from Q1 2022 and a 13% increase from Q4 2022. The Model Y is the second-best-selling EV in the Chinese market in Q1 2023, with 94,647 units sold. 42,782 units of Model 3 were sold in the same time period. Moreover, Tesla China exported 92,487 cars in the same period, demonstrating the company’s growing global reach.

Aion secured the third spot with 80,308 sales in Q1 2023, followed by Wuling (76,418) and Changan (52,849).
