BIS is in the process of publishing two more standards related to batteries for various passenger and goods-carrying vehicles.

Bureau of Indian Standard, National Standard Body of India, has published standards for test specifications for Lithium-ion Battery Packs and Systems for Electric Vehicles. The standard IS 17855: 2022 for these battery packs and systems is harmonized with ISO 12405-4: 2018.

This standard includes the test of the battery pack for the fundamental characteristic of performance, reliability, and electrical functionality.

This standard is formulated considering real-life scenarios for an EV, such as

  • The vehicle is in parking (the battery is not in use for a long-time)
  • The battery system is being shipped (stored)
  • Operating battery at low and high temperature, etc.,

Accordingly, various tests are incorporated into this standard.

After various EV fire incidents, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government would issue quality-centric guidelines for EVs in India. After two months of the announcement, BIS formulated these standards for EV batteries.

Further, keeping a view on the safety aspect of EV batteries, the Bureau of Indian Standard announced that it is in the process of publishing two more standards related to batteries for various passenger and goods-carrying electric vehicles.
